About the team - Financial Services (FS)

The Financial Services (FS) Tribe is responsible for designing, building, changing and running technology across all our financial products and functions. It supports Account Management, Credit Risk, Fraud, Collections and Recoveries, Customer Payments, Insurance and Retail Credit Products, and will help drive future expansion into new FS products including Personal Loans.

The CAM team is a multidisciplinary team operating in a DevSecOps manner using Scrumban to manage work flow, the main aim of the team is the migration of a large Oracle DB and it's associated stored procedures, APIs and batch schedules into an AWS environment, modernising technology and processes where possible and migrating existing solutions when it makes sense to do so.

Tech Stack: Java, Quarkus (Spring like), Oracle RDS, Terraform, AWS Lambda, AWS Step Functions, AWS API Gateway

About the role

As an Engineering Manager, you will be leading and line managing a team of both Data and QA Engineers across multiple squads. This role is both line management (50%) and hands-on (50%), along with leading the squad you’ll be actively involved in designing, implementing, assuring, and running the products and services that your squad are responsible for. You’ll build, maintain, and drive best practices in software and quality assurance engineering within the squad.

As an Engineering Manager you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Working with the Head of Technology you will lead a team of Software and QA Engineers across a constantly evolving, range of technologies – takes ownership for the personal development and performance of each member in the team, developing both technical skills and behaviours.
  • Leading a culture of opportunities where colleagues are supported to continuously improve their products and themselves
  • Collaborating with other colleagues to ensure all software is built with security, reliability, scalability, and operability
  • Ensuring we have the right Squad structures, with the right skills to successfully deliver and run our technology products including overall recruitment plans and needs for Engineering
  • Handling technical debt, working with architects and product management to balance work within the squads to ensure risks are managed around aging code and platforms
  • Promoting the sharing of knowledge and standard methodologies both internally and externally across Engineering

Requirements

What you’ll bring

  • Demonstrable experience of providing clear direction, coaching, mentoring and development support.
  • Experienced in managing any individual performance issues.
  • You are an engineer at heart and enjoy the challenge of building software solutions that deliver value to the business, being commercially and risk aware
  • You are known for your thought leadership and critical thinking in the technical space, while being able to apply business context
  • Your priorities are managing and leading engineering in building new high quality systems, improving stability, security and performance
  • You approach all work with the desire to do the best you and your team can, collaborating with all your colleagues, leading from the front, being an exemplar for how we work effectively as a team
  • You have experience of the following technology skills or knowledge: Java &, Amazon AWS
  • You are keen to learn new technologies and languages, owning the squad to continuously improve. You are effectively engaged in the wider technology community and consistently seeking to expand your knowledge
  • You are experienced in operating in an Agile environment (SCRUM & Kanban) and are constantly looking to automate in areas such as CI/CD and quality assurance
  • Experience working with the following technologies would be a bonus: Spring, Quarkus, OracleDB, Terraform, React & AWS specifics: Step Functions, Lambdas & API Gateway
