About the team (Customer Care)

The Customer Care Tribe is responsible for managing and handling customer service requests in an efficient, compliant, and secure manner. The tribe supports customer identity management, profile & preference, case management, knowledge management, customer satisfaction, communications using a variety of channels and the planning and strategy for the Customer Care operations teams.

Our Tech teams have recently gone through a transition to a new working model and culture, one structured around cross-functional teams we called squads. Our squads will make up an overall Tribe. Each tribe is responsible for designing, building, running and improving the technology that relates to their business area, all aimed at providing a world class experience for our customers.

About the role

As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for leading and line managing a team of both Software and QA Engineers. This role is both line management (70%) and hands-on (30%), along with leading the squad you’ll be actively involved in designing, implementing, assuring, and running the products and services that your squad are responsible for. You’ll create, maintain, and drive best practices in software and quality assurance engineering within the squad.

As an Engineering Manager you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Head of Technology you will lead a team of Software and QA Engineers across an ever-changing, range of technologies – takes responsibility for the personal development and performance of each member in the team, developing both technical skills and behaviours.
  • Leading a culture of opportunities where colleagues are supported to continuously improve their products and themselves
  • Defining and driving the engineering vision, strategy, and standards for the customer experience on web.
  • Collaborating with other colleagues to ensure all software is built with security, reliability, scalability, and operability
  • Ensuring we have the right Squad structures, with the right skills to successfully deliver and run our technology products including overall recruitment plans and needs for Engineering
  • Handling technical debt, working with architects and product management to balance work within the squads to ensure risks are managed around aging code and platforms
  • Promoting the sharing of knowledge and standard methodologies both internally and externally across Engineering


What you’ll bring

  • Demonstrable experience of providing clear direction, coaching, mentoring and development support.
  • Experienced in managing any individual performance issues.
  • You are an engineer at heart and enjoy the challenge of building software solutions that deliver value to the business, being commercially and risk aware
  • You are known for your thought leadership and critical thinking in the technical space, while being able to apply business context
  • Your priorities are managing and leading engineering in building new high quality systems, improving stability, security and performance
  • You approach all work with the desire to do the best you and your team can, collaborating with all your colleagues, leading from the front, being an exemplar for how we work effectively as a team
  • You have experience of some of the following technology skills or knowledge: React, Node.js, Amazon AWS technology & Terraforms
  • You are keen to learn new technologies and languages, owning the squad to continuously improve. You are effectively engaged in the wider technology community and consistently seeking to expand your knowledge
  • You are experienced in operating in an Agile environment (SCRUM & Kanban) and are constantly looking to automate in areas such as CI/CD and quality assurance
  • A background working with Chatbots would be a bonus
