Principal Data Governance Lead

Each team is responsible for designing, building, running and improving the technology that relates to their business area, all aimed at providing a world class experience for our customers.

About the role:

You will proactively lead and be the main contact for all items relating to Data Governance working with the Data Management and Governance Manager. You will engage regularly with the tribes represent and lead on Data Governance with specific focus on Data Privacy to ensure the customers data is protected at all times. You will be accountable for creating processes and procedures that supports a culture of effective data management and control. You will manage expectations with DPO, Legal and Commercial to ensure ongoing compliance with current and future data protection regulations and industry best practice.

You will also have line management duties for the Data Governance team.

Day to day:

Ensuring any known data risks are documented and understood working with the tribes on areas of improvement. You will lead and facilitate discussions advising on risk mitigation to improve business processes.

You will update senior managers across the business to ensure that data governance is at the forefront of any planning and decision-making which involves data. The role will have an impact on most business initiatives and projects to ensure they use data appropriately. The role holder thus serves as a central point of contact for data-governance questions and as an entry point for industry-leading thinking.

Line Management responsibilities for the Data Governance team, conducting regular 1-1s, providing a career progression for staff and performance reviews.

You will be expected to influence across all areas and levels of the business to ensure that full value is extracted from The Very Group’s data asset.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and set the vision and strategy for Data Governance for TVG.
  • Work closely with the Head of Compliance and DPO, Legal and Commercial on mitigating data risk at TVG.
  • Represent Data Governance at Commercial Triage, Tech CARM and Tech Data Governance sessions.
  • Lead by example on Data Governance best practices proactively advising tribes on best practice.
  • Develop a risk-based programme of work for Data Privacy and Governance as Workstream lead
  • Maintain an effective, central system of all data governance policies and supporting control documents
  • Work with the business and IT stakeholders to ensure that business processes, systems/applications and procedures are effective in meeting the current and future data protection legislation as well as industry best practice
  • Support with the training and management of Data Stewards and Business Data Owners, ensuring that they comply with agreed processes and procedures to maintain the ongoing level of data integrity
  • Identifying areas of waste/cost saving within the data estate
  • Advocate for the use of the data catalogue tooling.
  • Engage with the wider tribes across Very to ensure standards and data governance policies are considered.
  • Define and implement standards and ensure these are complied with, including standards for Data Quality and Data Management
  • Provide regular reporting to the Data Governance Manager including Data Quality and Data Management
  • Deputise for the Data Governance Manager at key meetings as and when required and chairing appropriate workstream level meetings and forums

Requirements

We are looking for candidates with previous experience within Data Governance field, able to demonstrate strong understanding of GDPR, DPA 2018 and PECR legislation. This role will suit individuals looking to implement and challenge their skills and experience in a brand new, fast paced, ecommerce environment.


Excellent communication skills - confident and articulate communicator liaising with both internal and external contacts. Able to build relationships, impart information and ensure action is carried out to meet deadlines.

You will be able to demonstrate a process orientated mind set to ensure we are set up for success.

A background of transforming processes to provide a more customer centric and efficient service

The successful candidate will have the ability to work pro-actively, be results oriented, self-driven and to work independently.
