About the role
As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for leading and line managing a team of Data Engineers. The role will include liaising and supporting colleagues in other communities, in particular QA testing, architecture, product ownership, delivery, and business analysis.
This role is a 70/30 split between line management and hands-on. You are expected to be actively involved in guiding, designing, implementing, and running the products and services that your team are responsible for. You’ll create, maintain, and drive best practices in Data and QA engineering within the team and the wider technology community.
For the business priorities an Engineering Manager will liaise with various stakeholders to understand what, why, how, and when so that this information can be shared across the data enablement community and assist in the planning of the portfolio priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Resourcing strategy for Data and QA Engineers within the Data Enablement PU.
- Technology strategy and delivery approach for the team (in-line with Architecture & Tech Lead guidelines).
- Data Engineering patterns including modelling techniques, processing, design patterns and frameworks.
- Overall support model for data engineering (alongside Senior Data Engineering Manager, Head of Technology and Service Manager).
- Performance management and development planning for the Engineers within your team.
- Works closely with architecture, Tech Lead, security, and service to ensure all software is inherently built & maintained with security, reliability, scalability, and operability.
- Leads recruitment for Data Engineers within your team alongside the Principal Engineers.
Essential knowledge and skills
- A strong collaborator and communicator.
- A background and relevant current experience in a hands-on data/software engineering role is essential.
- Confident and comfortable to share stories internally and externally to build our Very Group brand, and credibility to attract and retain talent.
- Significant experience of building and leading high performing data engineering teams operating in a lean, agile, DevSecOps based environment.
- Demonstrable experience of providing clear direction, coaching, mentoring and development support. Experienced in managing any individual performance issues.
- Experience of building, integrating, maintaining, and managing complex data platforms, architectures, and tooling ideally across multi-cloud environments.
- Experience of building data applications that have security, reliability, scalability, high availability, and concurrency built-in from the outset.
- Computer Science degree or relevant industry experience.

First stage – A 30 Minute Initial conversation with the Hiring Team.
Second Stage - A Final Stage split into 2 sessions, one focusing on Behavioural and the other will be more Technical questions.
